Kind Words

I have worked with Ian on and off over the span of my career. His insights have helped me open new doors in regards to my work. I have grown and developed as a better photographer because of it. He can help you open your internal doors, what you do with it is up to you. I consider him a mentor and a good friend.

August 24, 2010: I received a query from someone who worked with me over 15 years ago in Miami. He was searching for me because he wanted to share the following story. And now I want to share it with you.

I thought you were the one. I am actually doing something I have never done before. I am writing about myself for publication. It is very different.I have gone from being an account manager/biz developer to marketing director/magazine editor to being a consultant that started out doing PR and now into fund development. I raised $5 million in past two years to build a youth transition center for kids that age out of foster care (orphans)  at age 18. Mostly what I do is help non-profits get funding to make transformational change. Still a cheerleader and coach, Just a different way to use my resources. Anyway, the couple of days I spent with you pushed me to make these changes. Thanks Ian.

I am also writing grants to bring community dental care for a great school based program, working with an organization on a self-sustainable program to lift people out of poverty and helping a sailing school that teaches at risk kids the joy and skills of being part of a crew.

You told us to reconnect with people that influenced us. You taught me to follow my heart and look at what I’ve been part of because of that. You make a difference and the gift goes on.

I have know Ian for the past 15 years in an off and on working relationship.  After reconnecting with Ian and Heartstorming 6 months ago,  I was once again energized, excited and passionate about my work.  Heartstorming is an outlet for photographers to grow, create, re-invent and restore or re-invigorate the passion that we all have for this business.

The concept of the Heartstorming conference calls intimidated me in the beginning.  I was nervous, self-conscious and terrified about being in a group with other professional photographers.  Those feelings soon diminished about 5 minutes into my first conference call.  Everyone made me feel welcome and there were no feelings of competition amongst us,  only camaraderie.  Heartstorming has been a deeply moving experience for me,  one that I intend to continue.

Inspiration, focus and motivation.  These are just a few of the words I would use to describe my experience with Ian Summers as my career coach.  Ian quickly earned my trust and respect the first time I attended one of his talks at Photoplus in NY.  We have been working together for almost a year and a half now and I attribute most of my recent development as a photographer and communicator to Ian’s focused guidance. I can always rely on interesting and poignant articles each time I visit the Heartstorming blog.  Whether it’s a discussion about personal creativity, marketing, or numerous other topics, I can always expect to be engaged and inspired.  Ian Summers and his Heartstorming blog have become an indispensable part of my career as a photographer.

Ian is one of the most creative minds on the planet. We met while he was coaching my wife’s artistic career. He completely transformed the direction my life was taking, opening up new possibilities and encouraging me to take the personal chances to make them become realities. I was happy in medicine, but Ian showed me that there was another dimension to life, one that embraced creativity, fun, and exploration. I still love medicine, but my new passions of writing and art would likely still be dormant without the inspiration and guidance of this wonderful man. If you ever get the chance to meet Ian and benefit from his wisdom, POUNCE!

…coaching me, pushing me, laughing with  me, and opening me up to think bigger and deeper about the whys, hows, whats, whos and wheres of what I love to do. Ian is a storyteller like no other and a connector of people that inspires me everyday.

Working with Ian is always a pleasure. He is bright, innovative, patient and game. Game to try new things, to give practical advice, to share his knowledge, to offer some insight to help you see things in a new and different way. He knows that, if you are doing work that is near to your heart, you will find success and be happy. Ian and I worked together on an ongoing webinar series for liveBooks. His events were always very well attended because he is so popular but also because he is such a master at marketing himself and the events. People know they will be inspired emotionally to break boundaries but also receive tangible information that they can immediately act on to move themselves forward. Truly valuable information for many working artists. Plus! Ian will make you laugh. We can all use a good laugh. I can highly endorse Ian’s services on many levels. You will be inspired and motivated. Pretty powerful stuff

As Program Director of the Kansas City/Mid-America Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers, I brought Ian’s Heartstorming workshop to Kansas City twice in about 10 years. Ian inspired us and connected with us at a level that evoked inner creative resources that we didn’t know we had. Recently, in private consultation with Ian, he has, once again, shaken me up creatively and set me on the path to 21st-century marketing success. Ian Rocks!

Ian is the consummate “people person.” When you work with Ian you work with a genuine, kind, caring and pragmatic friend. Ian is the consummate professional. His empathy, intellect, knowledge and experience couple with his unique caring ability to listen and analyze. Stew this all together and it makes Ian one EXCEPTIONAL career coach and friend. Our first coaching session in 1989 brought me a deep appreciation for the exceptional creativity Ian embodies. Oh, did I say that Ian helped me to identify my real strengths and creative being? Ian’s unique creative nature, his confidence and his ability to help me understand and embrace risk put me on the more fulfilling and successful life “journey” rather than on some more mundane “career path.” Thank you Ian!

Ian is one of the kindest, gentlest souls I know. His true love of people is what makes him such a terrific creative consultant. He really gets inside of you and finds out what makes you tick. At the same time he doesn’t let you avoid the real work that you need to do to get where you want to go. He is incredibly passionate his work and the process. I highly recommend him.

I’m a big fan of Ian’s work – he is passionate about his process and I found working with Ian was not only about evolving as a creative and commercial artist but also about evolving as a human being. It’s more like psychotherapy for your art.

Just wanted to acknowledge you for the most powerful Heartstorming Newsletter yet.  Your words, others poems and insights have reaffirmed and also created a passionate storm within my mind and body.

I love your newsletters. Even though they are largely for ad people, it’s an easy translation. The David Whyte Lost offering is one of my favorites. Ian, I am on fire with inspiration and creative energy. Where, how to channel it? It blazes up in my individual sessions with clients, it smokes in my small woman’s groups. But there is more, more….I dream of creating community for/with people. Safe, sacred spaces for meaningful connection. A dumping ground for pain, a planning ground for collaborative action.
I do Playback. I have a performance art date set for an original show with my viola. Thanks for also being on fire and doing good work.
